Goodall R107J Jumbo Acoustic 1981 San Diego Natural
$5,750.00No sales tax for customers outside California.
I've had several Goodall guitars come through the shop of late, so I have my radar up for more. This one came to me at the recent Orange County vintage guitar show. I strummed one open G and had to have it.
The guitar has had a neck reset, and thus it plays perfectly. There is a nice, high saddle at the bridge. It sets up really nicely with a compound radiused fretboard.
The tone of the guitar is more balanced than most jumbos, but still has that big-body character. It is lightly built too, weighing in at just 4 pounds, 14 ounces.
The Sitka spruce top is nicely offset with flamed Koa binding. The back and sides are East Indian rosewood with grain that is more dramatic than most sets from the region.
There are no issues with the guitar, and the only repair work done is the above-mentioned neck reset, a nut replacement, and the addition of a Fishman under-saddle pickup.
A high quality hardshell case is included.
Goodall Guitars was founded in 1972 by master luthier James Goodall, whose passion for craftsmanship and innovation led to the creation of some of the finest acoustic guitars in the world. From the beginning, Goodall set out to build instruments that combined impeccable tonal balance, rich harmonic complexity, and effortless playability. Drawing from both traditional and modern guitar-building techniques, he developed a reputation for creating guitars with extraordinary sustain, dynamic response, and a signature clarity that appeals to discerning musicians across genres.
Originally based in San Diego, California, the company later relocated to Hawaii before settling in Fort Bragg, California, where James and his son Luke continue the family tradition of handcrafting each instrument with meticulous attention to detail. Using only the finest tonewoods and precision voicing techniques, Goodall Guitars has remained a small-scale workshop dedicated to quality over quantity, producing limited numbers of instruments that are highly sought after by professionals and collectors alike.
Over the decades, Goodall’s dedication to innovation has resulted in a diverse range of models, from fingerstyle-focused grand concert designs to powerful dreadnoughts and elegant parlor guitars. Each one embodies the company’s philosophy of blending playability with sonic excellence, ensuring that every Goodall guitar becomes a lifetime instrument for those who own one. Today, Goodall Guitars continues to uphold its legacy of artistry and tone, maintaining its reputation as one of the most respected boutique guitar brands in the world.
