1969 Les Pauls are always a trip. Gibson dumped the Les Paul in 1960/61 in favor of the SG/Les Paul format. 1968 brought a return of the guitar to the lineup. Production totals are well documented for all the models except for 1968 and 1969 Deluxes. Larry Meiner's book shows no totals for Deluxes until 1970. Features changed quickly in this period, and it can be assumed that there weren't many made. Combine that with the fact that there are about three different configs in 1969, each type is exceedingly rare.
This example has no volute, no Made in USA stamp, a one-piece (non-pancake) body, a three piece mahogany neck and the logo with no dot on the i in Gibson, and splits in the b and the o. The mix of features varied in this era, making each example even more rare.
This guitar has an old headstock repair. The previous owner bought the guitar at Guitar Center in San Francisco in 1978. About 10 years later, his dog knocked the guitar off a stand, breaking the headstock. The stable repair has held since. No other repairs or finish work have been done to the neck or body.
Despite this unfortunate development, this guitar is an amazing player with killer tone.
The neck is worn and feels great. Frets were replaced at some point with medium replacements, adding to the playability.
The original pickups and pots are in place. Pots date to mid 1969. The cable to the output jack has been spliced and taped, but the pickups and the rest of the wiring are original with no solder breaks. Patent stickers adorn the back of the pickups.
Tuners are older Schallers, and the output jack plate was changed out for a black, metal one. The bridges, pickup rings, knobs, pickguard, switch tip are all original. The lightweight tailpiece is original as well, as is the patent number tune o matic bridge. We replaced the saddles on the bridge with new ones, and the retaining wire was missing when I received the guitar. 5 of the original saddles are in the case - they're really tarnished and pitted.
The case appears to be of the correct era and it is in nice condition.
