This guitar arrived recently and had time to make it through our process before it was whisked away for the Nashville Guitar Show in Franklin, TN on March 23rd and 24th. See it there!
While it looks all original, the guitar went back to Fender at some point. It is well documented that Fender would tag incoming warranty work with the letters RR, usually in the neck pocket. This guitar has that mark, as well as the letters SB (presumably for Sunburst), and what looks like the letters DO just above.
While there is no way to tell for sure, it looks as though the guitar was oversprayed. Using a blacklight, one can see differences in the finish around the body's edges. The finish looks to be very much like an original. It is definitely nitrocellulose, so I am assuming that the guitar went back for the work prior to 1968. The neck does not appear to have been refinished or oversprayed. A professional refret was performed however, perhaps when the guitar was at Fender. The frets are full and they are of appropriate size for the vintage of the guitar.
All the electronics are original. The body date is from late 1963 and the neck date and serial number is from early 1964.
The pickguard is a genuine 60s Fender part, but there is no hole in the body that matches up with one of the pickguard holes. I assume that this pickguard was changed by Fender when the guitar was there for R&R.
The case is a modern Fender hardshell.
