This Jazzmaster is one of those gloriously worn and well-played guitars that always catch my eye and that of my customers.
The guitar appears to be all original, and like some you'll find from this era, it has a mix of features and dating info from 1959 and 1960. The transitions Fender was instituting at this period make this fairly common.
Prior to diving in, let's talk condition. Yes, the guitar show significant wear. This would be a perfect model for a relic project - it is the consummate workhorse. The wear is even throughout, from the arm wear on the lower bout to the deliciously smooth back of the neck, to the heavy belt buckle impact on the back of the body.
The photosensitive red band in the sunburst is long gone on the outwardly visible parts of the body, but you see it under the pickguard and the tremolo unit when removed. This trait makes for such a cool look to the guitar, the two-tone sunburst effect.
The neck retains the original finish and the unmistakable feel of a played-in Fender that every relic tries to imitate but jute can't nail. With all the wear, this guitar has retained the original headstock logo, which is in great shape. The logo is often chipped, damaged, and/or mostly missing on guitars like this one. The neck heel shows where it picked up finish from the neck pocket - a key authentication indicator.
The frets are admittedly pretty hammered. They look like they could be original, but I don't see how that could really be possible. There is no fretboard pullout that would be evidence of a prior refret. The guitar plays reasonably well as is, but it will benefit from a proper refret.
There are no modifications or repairs to the body or neck. We check everywhere - under the tuners, the bridge, pickguard etc.
Parts that are changed: The volume pot, which appears to have been changed out in the late 1980s. The rest of the electronics are original, with pots dating to late 1960. The bridge, which is a "patent number" tremolo unit, which Fender used from early 1962 on.
The body bears the original pencil date under the bridge pickup - 10/60. The neck plate serial number is from 1959, and the neck bears no neck date, typical of a 1959.
Some work has been done on the pickguard to get it to fit after having shrunk, as these guards do. A close look shows some filing around the pickup openings. It allows the pickup heights to to be adjusted.
Because I'm a Jazzmaster but, we get a lot of them. Our guy, Tim, is well versed in setup and this one now plays superbly.
Comes with an original brown case that has seen a bunch of wear, which isn't all that surprising.
