This Les Paul Goldtop deftly bridges the gap, falling somewhere between "worn with mojo" and "original and gorgeous", but closer to the latter than the former.
We spent a good amount of time getting the guitar cleaned and set up, including a fret crown. The frets had been milled and showed some wear, so it felt like the right thing to do before listing. it paid off - the guitar plays very well.
We always check truss rods so you don't find out later that there is no room for relief adjustments in the future. This one passed the test, and we were able to get the action perfect.
The electronics are all original with no component changes or messed up solders. Pots date to the 20th week of 1977, and the pickups are original, one being a patent sticker version and the other having the patent number embossed in the baseplate.
The tuners were changed to modern Gibson replacements that required no change to the headstock. The strap buttons are aged repro parts. The knobs, pickguard, bridges - everything else is original.
The goldtop finish is nicely aged and well preserved. The back of the body shows some buckle rash as well as some light attempts to cover the spots that were worn down to the mahogany. This work is localized to the larger, visible spots on the back of the guitar.
To sum it up, this guitar is a player - a workhorse that's also viable for the collector.
