This 1959 Les Paul Special is a nearly perfect, uncirculated example of what so many players agree is the best sounding Gibson solidbody guitar, the simple but highly effective double cut.

There is something about the way the compact, mahogany body and set neck respond to the strings passing over the wrap tailpiece, with bridge studs mounted deep in the slab body, opening the door for the resonation that these guitars are famous for.

The P-90s, more versatile than some believe, can sound sweet or they can roar, and with two of them you get a huge array of tones.

This all-original guitar has not suffered a crack, repair, or change to date, unlike so many of the 1821 Specials Gibson built in 1959.  It is also a light example at just under 7 pounds.  It is clear that the guitar has not been played nearly as much as others on the market.  Check out the close up pictures of the frets.  There is some light wear on the back of the neck, but overall this is an extremely clean piece with strong cherry color and gorgeous looks.

The neck is perfect and the truss rod was checked to be certain that there is room for future neck relief adjustment.

There is one issue to report - the neck pickup volume control allows full neck pickup output, but will only turn the signal down to about 50%.  The pot has normal travel from 0 to 10, and the rotation is smooth - it doesn't freely rotate, catch or provide irregular output.  Frankly, the way it works now is fully useable as the amount of control it offers gives you full control over dynamics and also plenty of interaction between pickups when you are in the middle pickup position.  It is likely that the potentiometer can be repaired by opening it and adjusting the wiper - luthiers with such experience exist and the process is documented online.  That said, we are leaving the guitar as it is.

The capper with this item is the fact that it includes an original 5 latch Lifton hard case - the same case that is original for the holy grail Les Paul Standards from the era.  The case alone has a value of at least $3000 on the market, thanks to the increase in value of the LP Standard.  All the latches, hinges and the handle on the case work perfectly.  There are no breaks or structural issues.  There is a layer of glue here and there where a previous owner applied it to keep the brown "Cali Girl" covering in place.  They were liberal with the glue.  We carefully removed much of it, leaving the layer in the areas where it is helping to keep the case covering intact - the seams and edges of the case.
