Now we have both K&F lap steels from the early days prior to the launch of Fender.
As stated in the listing for our other K&F, Doc Kaufman and Leo Fender went into business together in 1945, making steels and amps. Doc thought better of it in 1946, leaving Leo to change the world on his own. He did just fine, thank you very much!
This steel is undoubtedly from the first year of production. It is in beautiful cosmetic shape. I do believe that the pickup has been rewound, and it looks so much like the work done on our other piece by Tom Brantley that I have to assume he did the work. The pickup design pretty much guaranteed that all of these will have to be, or already have been rewound. The windings go fully around the strings, and the could was protected by a layer of something similar to wax paper. The paper gives way over the years, exposing the coil and hanging on the strings, muting them and making the steel impossible to restring or play. We had the luck to hear our other steel before and after the work was done - the rewound pickup sounds pretty much identical.
This example has also received new pots and a new tone capacitor. One of the original knobs has been changed to a different, period correct Bakelite knob. There are no other changes to the instrument.
If you have an old K&F Woodie amp you should grab this steel - the pairs really amplify in value! Get it?
The original case is included.
